A license issued by your local authority is required for any person who keeps a “breeding establishment”, even if this is within their own private dwelling. If your property meets the following criteria, you will need to apply for a breeders license and provide it to Petwise on request, you must also include your license number within your adverts:
- If you are in the business of both breeding and selling dogs, you will need to be licensed irrespectively of the number of litters your animals produce within a 12 month period. Your local authorities licensing department and the HMRC website can provide ore information on the selling of animals for commercial gain and what constitutes a “profit”.
- England, Scotland & Wales – If you breed 3 or more litters within a 12 month period, you will require a breeders license, even if you are not selling for commercial gain.
Different licensing departments may have slightly different rules as to the requirements of a breeders license, so it is important that you check with them to ensure you are operating within the law. Some require a breeders license for 2 litters within 12 months whereas others may require this after and including 5 litters. It is your responsibility to be correctly licensed.
